The integration of WhatsApp with Wear OS, Google’s operating system for smartwatches, was announced at the recent Google I/O developer conference. With this exciting development, smartwatch users will be able to enjoy the vast majority of WhatsApp’s features right on their wrist.
WhatsApp Comes to Wear OS
WhatsApp is to become a native app on Wear OS, enabling users to access and use most standard messenger actions on their smartwatches. Initially, you’ll be able to respond to recent messages using text or audio and even answer calls straight from your wrist.
However, the initial release of WhatsApp for Wear OS won’t support starting new conversations or searching older chats. Google has stated that these features are for future updates when the app becomes universally available.
Privacy Matters
User data security remains a priority, with end-to-end encryption extending to smartwatch conversations. This practice mirrors the encryption already in place for WhatsApp chats on mobile and desktop devices.
The beta version of WhatsApp for Wear OS released earlier this week. Users of the WhatsApp Beta for Android (version 2.23.10.10) can now link their accounts with their smartwatch software.
Moreover, Google engineer Sameer Samat has indicated that the full version of the native WhatsApp app is for release in the North American summer, meaning it should be available between June and September.

Wear OS: A Fast-Growing Platform
During the conference, Samat also shared that Wear OS is currently the world’s fastest-growing smartwatch platform. The operating system has seen a fivefold increase in usage since the launch of Wear OS 3 in 2021.
Smartwatches powered by Google’s Wear OS are primarily produced by Samsung, followed by Fossil and Ticwatch. Furthermore, Google itself joined the fray with the launch of the Pixel Watch in 2022.
